About Us

We are a Kenyan registered Non-Governmental Organization with the mandate to deliver high quality educational interventions at primary and post primary level through partnerships with schools.

Our Mission

Providing a gender-balanced, accessible, and holistic education to the underprivileged children of Mukuru kwa Reuben and its environs.

Our Vision

To be the leading accessible quality education organization in Kenya, where underprivileged individuals realize their full potential.

Our Motto

"We strive to shine"
The phrase that leads all of our staff, pupils, and community to continue bringing smiles to the faces of Mukuru kwa Reuben's children.

The Need

There is only one formal public primary school serving more than 2000 children in Mukuru Kwa Reuben while there is no secondary school, public or private. Not a single public school has been established in the last 20 years. Due to the limited education provision, and in spite of GoK’s launch of FPE in 2003 and secondary fees subsidy in 2008, the enrollment level in the slum is only 30%, against a national level of over 85%. On average it costs $200 to send a child to primary school and $500 to secondary for a year. This is a challenge to Mukuru residents where 55% earn between $500 – $1250 per year.

Testimonials

“The holistic education I received at Gatoto Primary School (1992 – 2000), paved the way for my secondary and university education, career path and numerous extra-mural activities – presentation of academic papers, leadership roles, talent shows, sport participation and philanthropic activities.” – Walter Shivo

“Gatoto and their valued sponsors rescued my siblings and myself from a life of crime, drug addiction and sexual immorality by providing the moral support, education and financial assistance to fulfill my dreams and goals. I hope to return to hold another ‘Child’s Hand’ and offer them the same invaluable guidance I have received.” – Ibrahim Meso
